America the Beautiful Pass Camping Discounts: What Is and Isn't Covered

· Sharon Ben-Moshe

Which passes provide camping discounts?

The federal Interagency Pass Program issues several distinct passes under the America the Beautiful banner. Campers frequently assume every pass provides camping discounts, but federal law restricts accommodation discounts to specific categories:

  • Interagency Senior Pass (Lifetime and Annual): Available to US citizens or permanent residents aged 62 and older. Provides a 50 percent discount on basic campsite fees.
  • Interagency Access Pass (Lifetime): Available to US citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities. Provides a 50 percent discount on basic campsite fees.
  • Interagency Annual Pass (80 dollars): Covers entrance fees and standard amenity day-use fees across federal recreation sites. Provides zero discount on camping or utility hookup fees.
  • Military and Veteran Passes: Cover standard entrance fees and day-use fees. Provide zero discount on camping fees.
  • Every Kid Outdoors 4th Grade Pass: Covers entrance fees only. Provides zero discount on camping fees.

Only the Senior Pass and the Access Pass confer the 50 percent camping discount on Recreation.gov.

What the 50 percent discount covers

Even with a valid Senior or Access pass, the discount does not apply to all line items on your reservation receipt:

  • Covered: The base nightly campsite fee for standard tent sites, standard RV sites, and primitive walk-in sites.
  • Excluded: Utility surcharge fees. Many campgrounds charge separate utility add-ons for electric pedestals, sewer hookups, or water connections. The pass discount applies only to the base recreation fee portion, leaving utility surcharges at full price.
  • Excluded: Transaction and booking fees. The standard eight-dollar to ten-dollar online reservation fee and cancellation charges are non-discountable.
  • Excluded: Group sites and historic cabins. The vast majority of group campgrounds, historic fire lookouts, and rustic cabins are classified as expanded amenity facilities and are exempt from pass discounts.

Always review the line-item fee breakdown on the Recreation.gov checkout screen to see the exact discount applied.

Linking your pass number to Recreation.gov

To claim your 50 percent discount when booking online:

  • Log into your personal account on Recreation.gov.
  • Navigate to your account profile settings and select the pass management tab.
  • Enter your physical pass number and pass type into the verified credentials field.
  • When selecting dates at an eligible campground, the booking engine applies the 50 percent reduction to the base nightly rate at checkout.

The person named on the pass must be present during the stay. Reserving a campsite under a grandparent's Senior Pass when that individual is not traveling with the group is a federal violation.

Physical pass verification on arrival

Applying a pass online does not complete the verification process:

  • Host inspection: Camp hosts and park rangers receive a daily roster indicating which sites claimed pass discounts.
  • Identification check: You must present both your physical pass card and a matching government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) to the camp host upon arrival.
  • Card signatures: The pass must be signed in ink by the pass holder on the signature strip on the back of the card. Unsigned passes are invalid.

If you fail to produce the physical pass and matching photo identification, the facility collects the full remaining 50 percent balance in cash or cancels the reservation.
